Afdak - Feb 2018 Carport - Feb 2018

In Februarie het ons iemand gekry wat ons afdak verder kon bou. Hy het die staal konstruksiegemaak en die dak en geute opgesit.

In February we found someone who could complete our carport. He made the steel construction and the roof and gutters.

OutbuildingsBuitegeboue

Die jaar het ons begin om die motorhuis afdak aan te pak. Ongelukkig het ons teen spoed gehad met ons eerste kontrakteur. Die tweede kontrakteur Rico het tot dakhoogte gekom. Ongelukkig het hy van sy werkers verloor en staan die projek stil.

In die fotos sien julle Rico en Eben.

During this year we started the garage. Unfortunately, we had some trouble with our first contractor. The second contractor Rico manage to build to roof height. Unfortunately, he lost one of his workers and had toe stop.

Die pleister- en verfwerk aan oostekant van - aardskip.com - finish on the easternside.

Hier sien julle hoe die pleister- en verfwerk lyk aan die oostekant van die aardskip. Uiteindelik is al die strooibale aan die buitekant toe gepleister.

Here you see how the plaster and paint work looks like on the eastern side of the earthship. Finally all straw bales are plastered on the outside.

Herpleister westemuur van die - aardskip-com Replastering the western wall.

Ons het voort gegaan om die weste muur met sement te pleister en is tans besig om dit te verf met 'n mengsel van kleigrond, kalk en sement (4:1:1). Die muur lyk net soos die oorspronklike kalk pleister. Verder is ons besig om die binne kant van die weste muur met kleigrond, skalie en strooi (1:1:1)
te pleister.

We continued to plaster the west wall with cement and currently painting the wall with a mixture of clay, lime and cement (4: 1: 1). It looks just like our original lime plaster. Furthermore, we are plastering the inside of the western wall with clay, shale and straw (1: 1: 1).

Christiaan the architect of the - aardskip.com en Danie het kom help om weste muur te pleister.

This week we managed to get a very good worker, Danie on the left in photo, that was prepared to learn how to plaster straw bales. We also got our architect, Christian on the right, to show us how to plaster straw bales. Unfortunately our previous attempt to plaster the western wall all got
washed off. The weather from the west is just to heavy for our mud and lime plaster. We want to Christiaan for his demo and also Dave for the sieve/screen and Julius for the schaffolding.

Hierdie week het ons daarin geslaag om 'n goeie werker, Danie links in die foto, te kry wat bereid is om te leer hoe om strooibale te pleister. Ons het ook ons argitek, Christian aan die regterkant, gekry om ons te wys hoe om strooibale te pleister. Ongelukkig het ons vorige poging heeltemal afgewas
in die reën. Die weer van die weste is net te swaar vir ons modder en kalk pleister. Ons wil Christiaan bedank vir sy moeite en vir ook Dave bedank vir die sif en Julius vir die steiers.

Die plasing van die Sonskip op die Natural Homes kaart is 'n ongelooflike eer, want hulle plaas geen aardskepe / "earthships" nie. Siende dat ons Sonskip van "earthbags" gemaak is en nie buitebande het hulle laat besluit om dit wel te klassifiseer as 'n eko-vriendelike-huis.

We added a lime plaster layer to prevent dissolving of the clay plaster layer. - aardskip.com - Hier kan julle duidelik die kalkpleister laag sien om die muur waterdig te maak.

Die kalkpleister bestaan uit:
2 dele sand
2 dele rooi grond (kleiagtig)
1 deel kalk
Kleurstof

Die doel van die pleisterlaag is om die sorg dat die reën nie net die kleipleister laag afspoel nie. Ons het sopas 30mm reën gehad en dit het gehou.

Die afwerking vir die muur gaan so organies bly.

Tussen hakkies omdat ons suidelik dak so plat lê het die sterk suidelike wind het die reën onder die nok in gedryf en dit het gedrup in die plante bak. Ons sal die gate tussen die dakplate en die nok moet blok.

The lime plaster consist of sand, ground (clayish), lime and colour. The purpose is to prevent the rain from dissolving the clay plaster. It works, we had a storm yesterday with hail and 30mm rain and the plaster is still intact.

By the way, at the notch of the roof the strong southerly wind blow some rain into the earthship. We will have to block the holes between the notch and the sheets, no train smash.

Challenges

Currently we have the following serious challenges.

1. The one earthbag wall on the western side is not stable enough and we decided to build the store room first before we continue placing the roof.

2. Due to heavy rain in April almost 200 mm. We discover earth movements on the water tanks and we analysed it and have solution to prevent it in the future.

3. Unfortunately we have a more serious water leak on the eastern side of the earthship. This was not suppose to happen, because we were fairly causes with our water protection layer. Unfortunately something went wrong and we will have to do repairs. Additions that we will add, is to keep the rain from penetrating the hill behind the earthship. Plus we will add extra water drainage systems underneath the earthship's floor.

Fotos eerste week 2012

plaster protection layer against the harsh sun.
4. Twedehandse / weggooi polistireen word onder die vloer versteek as
tempratuur isolasielaag. - Also notice we have tarred the bags to protect
them against the Karoo sun.

We have reached layer ten, well done to the team. At this rate we will
putting up the roof before March 2012.
