Kitchen cupboards cutlery drawer and pantry
Kombuiskaste eetgerei-laai en spens




In the first picture you see how cutlery drawer should look like.
In die eerste foto sien julle hoe 'n eetgerei-laai moet lyk.


Furthermore, you can see the large wooden panel of the outside of the pantry.

October was a bad month for rain, we measured only 0.1mm of rain and the water tanks are 35% full. Fortunately there are a forecast of rain over the weekend.

The temperatures were incredibly high was last week, outside was it 40degrees C, in the corridor (greenhouse) 32degrees and the chambers was a acceptable 27degrees.

Oktober was 'n slegte maand wat reën betref ons het slegs 0.1mm reën gemeet en die water tenks is 35% vol.  Daar is gelukkig 'n voorspelling van reën oor die naweek.

Die temperature was ongelooflik hoog laas week, buitekant was die 40grade C, in die gang (kweekhuis) 32grade en die kamers was 'n gangbare 27grade.

Droogte gebreek of nie - aardskip.com - Drought, yes or no?

We had all hopes that 2016 will not be a drought stricken year. Unfortunately February does not give us any good indications. We had thus far only 3.4mm rain, where as in previous years it rained just about every week and up to 45mm in the month.

Furthermore it is extremely hot, we keep on hitting the 40 degree Celcius mark. The earthship can compensate about 12 degrees. This makes the rooms bearable, however the living area is to open get all the advantage. We will start to implement more climate control measures in the future.

The other interesting aspect is that the sun is now starting to move into the earthship, so it is time to saw some seeds. We can not wait to have some veggies in the house again. See the line on the windowsill in the photo.
Ons het gehoop dat 2016 nie 'n droogtegeteisterde jaar sal wees. Ongelukkig voorspel Februarie niks goed nie. Ons het tot dusver slegs 3.4mm reën gekry, waar dit die vorige jare omtrent elke week gereën het, en tot en met 45mm vir die maand.

Verder is dit baie warm en Orania raak die 40 graad Celsius merk gereeld, onder ‘n koelte boom. Gelukkig kompenseer die aardskip die temperatuur met ongeveer 12 grade. Die kamers is draaglik, egter is die leefarea te oop om die hele voordeel te kry. Ons sal begin om meer klimaat beheermaatreëls in die toekoms te implementeer.

Die ander interessante aspek is dat die son nou begin om in die aardskip in te skyn, so dit is tyd om 'n paar sade te saai. Ons kan nie wag om weer groente in die huis te hê nie. Sien streep wat die son maak op die vensterbank foto.

Actual Solar Power verus Model - aardskip.com - Werklike sonkrag versus Model.

In the graph you see the actual and theoretical solar power in kWh per kW installed PV pannels average per day every month.

In die grafieke sien u die werklike en  teoretiese sonkrag in kWh per kW geïnstalleer panele gemiddeld per dag elke maand.


The following points can be derived from the chart:
+ These model values includes a 40% loss.
+ Both values is kWh per kW installed PV pannel.
+ The panels are installed at a angle of 40 degrees.
+ The discrepancies (in. March, October) could be from weather conditions.

Effect of the PV direction on the Solar Power - aardskip.com - Effek van die sonpaneel se rigting op krag lewering

In the graphs you see the theoretical effect of the solar panel's direction on the solar power in kWh per kW in installed per day.

In die grafieke sien u die teoretiese effek van die sonpaneel se rigting op die sonkrag in kWh per kW geinstalleer per dag.


The following points can be derived from the chart:
  • [30 NS] - solar panel's angle is 30 degrees in the north-south direction on the horizon at a latitude -29.83.
  • [30 W] - solar panel's angle is 30 degrees in the western direction from the horizon.
  • [Beide] - Half of the solar panels are tilted NS and the other half is tilted in the Western direction at 30 degrees.
  • The panels tilted at a 30 degrees in the North-South direction offer the best results, Winter and Summer.
  • The panels tilted at a 30 degrees in the western direction give the worst results, an average loss of 24% per year.
  • Even a combination of panels deliver worse results, an average loss of 12% per year.
Note: Due to other losses will the practical results be about 85% of the theoretical results. Furthermore, we can assume that heat in the summer will reduce the power.

  • Selfs ‘n kombinasie van die panele lewer nie goeie resultate nie’n gemiddelde 12% verlies per jaar.

Nota: As gevolg van verliese sal die lewering ongeveer 85% wees van die teoretiese syfers. Verder moet ‘n mense aanvaar dat hitte in die Somer gaan die krag lewering verlaag.

Reënval en tenks watervlak - aardskip.com - rainfall and tanks water level.


In die grafiek sien u ons watervlak in ons 30kl tenks. 'n Vlak van 2000mm is 100% vol.

Die volgende punte kan van die grafiek afgelei word:
1.   U sal merk dat in 2013 het ons die tenks 3 keer met rivierwater aangevul, geen reënval maar tog word die tenks voller.
2.  In 2014 en 2015 was dit nie nodig nie.
3.  U sal sien dat die tenks drie keer in 2014 en eenkeer in 2015 oorgeloop het.
4.  Laastens van die grafiek kan ons ook aflei dat dit waarskynlik binne kort gaan begin reën.

1.   You will note that in 2013 we filled the tanks three times with river water, not rainfall but the tanks were fuller.
2.   In 2014 and 2015 it was not necessary.
3.   You will see the tanks were three times in 2014 and once overfull in 2015.
4.   Finally, from the chart we can conclude that it probably will rain soon.

Ekstra isolasie op die plafon - www.aardskip.com - Extra insulation from recycled polystyrene on the ceiling.

Die laaste twee weke het ons hard gewerk om die tweede kamer se plafon, deur en vensters klaar te maak. In die foto sien u die ekstra herwonne polistireen wat ons gebruik vir ekstra isolasie. Die polistireen het ons by die asgate opgetel in stukke gebreek van kleiner as 50mm in deursnee en in sakke geplaas en bo op die plafon geplaas. Die effek van die totale isolasie is geweldig.

Sien tabel vir die minimum en maksimum temperature in grade Celsius.
T. is waar slegs die effek van die termiesemassa gemeet is.
I. is waar ook die effek van die plafon met isolasie gemeet is.
Die I. deel van die tabel se data is gemeet vanaf 09-09-2014 en die T. gedeelte die tydperk voor die plafon met isolasie geplaas was in "Kamer 3".

Uit die tabel is die termiesemassa se effek die duidelikste sigbaar tussen die "Buite" temperatuur en "Kamer 2". Die minimums verskil 12 grade en die maksimums 9 grade, elke keer tot die voordeel van die inwoner. So die termiesemassa effek is so 10,5 grade.

Die effek van die isolasie en plafon is duidelik te sien in die temperature tussen "Kamer 3", "Gang" en "Kamer 2". Hier verskil die minimums 8 grade en die maksimums 5 grade. So die isolasie effek is so 6,5 grade. Ten opsigte van die "Buite" temperature verskil die minimums 17 grade en die maksimums 12 grade. Dus is beide se effek so 14,5 grade.



Intussen gaan dit goed met die voedsel produksie, ons het genoeg Flespampoen ("Butternut"), Tamatie, Spinasie, Boerekool ("Kale"), Basiliekruid, Roosmaryn, Origanum, Pietersielie, Slaaiblare en Wortels. Verder groei die piesang- en avokadobome baie goed.


Die week het die 12mm gereën en is die tenks nou 40% vol.

The last two weeks we have worked hard to finish the second room's ceiling, door and windows. In the picture you can see the extra recycled polystyrene that we used for extra insulation. We picked up the polystyrene at the rubbish hole, broken it into smaller than 50mm in diameter pieces and placed it in bags and put the bags on top of the ceiling. The effect of total insulation is great.

See table for min and max temperatures in degrees Celsius.
T. is were we only measured the effect of thermal mass.
I. is were we also measured the effect of the ceilings and insulation.
The I. part of the table's data is measured from 09-09-2014 and the T.part predates the ceiling and insulation installation in "Room 3".

From the table is the effect thermal mass is most visible between the "Out" and "Room 2" temperatures. The minimums vary 12 degrees and maximums 9 degrees, each time to the benefit of the occupants.

The effect of the insulation and ceiling can clearly be seen in the temperatures between "Room 3", "Planter" and "Room 2". The differences are for the minimums 8 degrees and for the maximums 5 degrees. In relation to the "Out" are the temperatures 17 degrees for the minimums and the maximums is 12 degrees.


Meanwhile, goes well with our food production, we have enough Butternuts, Tomatoes, Spinach, Kale, Basil, Rosemary, Oregano, Parsley, Lettuce and Carrots. Further grow the banana and avocado trees very well.


The week it rained 12mm and the tanks now 40% full. We are very thankful.
